It's possible that the next major update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons will arrive this fall, given Nintendo's promise that significant new content will be added soon.

Because of the increasing amount of time that has passed between Animal Crossing: New Horizons updates, it is becoming more and more likely that the next major update will not occur until much later in 2021. If this is true, it raises the question of whether any new features or enhancements to the game will be released this fall and, if so, which ones will be improved or added.

In the summer and fall of last year, Animal Crossing Nook Miles Tickets underwent some of its most significant transformations in its history. Scuba diving was introduced to the game as part of the summer 2020 New Horizons update, which was released in two waves over the course of two weeks. New Horizons was also expanded as a result of this episode, and a couple of returning characters were introduced to the audience. Growing pumpkins for use in DIY recipes was made possible by a new farming mechanic introduced in the autumn update, which was a first for the game series.

After receiving player feedback that recent Animal Crossing updates had failed to deliver substantial new content, Nintendo promised that significant updates to New Horizons would be released in the near future as a result of the feedback. However, given that summer 2021 has nearly passed without any notable changes, it appears more likely that the year's next major update will take place either during the fall or perhaps during the holiday season in the year 21. What might the next New Horizons update look like if it's released this fall, and if it is?

An expansion to the game's farming features or the addition of new buildings could be included in a fall update to New Horizons in 2021. One possibility for a fall update to Animal Crossing is an expansion to the game's farming features.
The only crop that can be grown at the moment, aside from the fruit trees that have appeared in every other game in the franchise, are pumpkins. Perhaps a cooking mechanic, similar to that found in similar games such as Stardew Valley, could be implemented. If islands are expanded, as has been hinted at in recent rumored Animal Crossing NMT leaks, players may be provided with more space to construct a suitable area for their crops to grow in comfort. In light of the significant role that customization plays in New Horizons, it would be a fantastic way to help differentiate the game even further from its predecessors.

In addition to island expansions, the introduction of new or returning buildings to the game appears to be a viable option for a fall New Horizons update, which appears to be on par with the possibility of island expansions. Although many Animal Crossing fans have asked for it to return, Brewster's Roost has yet to appear in New Horizons, and the fall would be an excellent time to do so. It could also bring with it the return of side jobs, allowing players to work as a barista or even branch out into new fields of employment. As a result, not only would there be more ways to make Animal Crossing Bells available, but there would also be significantly more levels of playability to enjoy. There are plenty of opportunities to branch into areas that haven't been explored yet in Animal Crossing: New Horizons NMT, and these possibilities are only a brief speculation into what might be coming if a major update occurs this fall. Animal Crossing: New Horizons NMT is currently available on the Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo 3DS Lite.
